Google Doodle Pays Tribute To Legendary Indian Classical Dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai.  Today is noted danseuse and Padma Bhushan recipient Mrinalini Sarabhai's 100th birthday and in honor of the legendary dancer, Google is depicting her in a Google Doodle by Sudeepti Tucker. Mrinalini Sarabhai is shown with her signature parasol, standing proudly in the auditorium Darpana Academy of Performing Arts where her students are also dancing on stage.  Sarabhai was born in Kerala, spending her early years in Switzerland. In school, she was introduced to Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a system of introducing musical concepts through movement. She spent time studying acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She once said, "From the moment of my knowledge of existence, I claimed the dance as my own life. It shaped the entire consciousness of my being and it never changed.." Today's Google doodle commemorates Dadasaheb Phalke, who is called the 'father of Indian cinema', on the occasion of his 148th birth anniversary. Phalke gave Indian cinema its first silent film, 'Raja Harishchandra', in 1913. He made 95 movies and 27 short films in his career spanning 19 years. Phalke was born in Trimbak, in present-day Maharashtra, and his father was a noted scholar. The young Phalke developed a keen interest in the arts and went on to study, at various points, an array of disciplines, including photography, lithography, architecture, engineering, and even magic, says Google's write-up on the filmmaker. While Phalke was working as a painter and theatre set designer he chanced upon Alice Guy's silent film, 'The Life of Christ' (1910). Mahadevi Varma Is Today's Google Doodle: Know All About The Celebrated Hindi Poet. NEW DELHI: Google Doodle on Friday celebrated Mahadevi Varma, a Jnanpith Award-winning Hindi poet, freedom fighter and champion of women's rights. Widely regarded as the "modern Meera", Varma was born on March 26, 1907, in Farukhabad, to what she later described as a "relatively liberal family". However, her parents married her off at the age of 9, though she continued to live in Allahabad to complete her education while her husband stayed in Lucknow. It was Varma's mother who inspired her to write in Hindi and Sanskrit. As a young woman, she penned her first verses in secret -- only to be discovered by her friend Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, who also went on to become a well-known poet. Ola to add 10,000 electric three-wheelers to the fleet. Indian ride-hailing firm Ola, backed by Japan's SoftBank Group, said it will add 10,000 electric three-wheelers to its fleet over the next 12 months as part of a plan to promote the use of electric vehicles. Ola plans to have 1 million electric vehicles on offer by 2021, it said in a statement, adding that it will work with various state governments, vehicle manufacturers and battery companies to meet its target. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is determined to promote electric vehicle use, starting with public transport and taxis, to combat rising pollution and reduce the nation's dependence on imported oil. India has also set a target to make all new vehicles electric by 2030. Today's Google doodle marks the 114th birth anniversary of K.L. Saigal. . Today is the 114th birth anniversary of Kundan Lal Saigal, or KL Saigal as he is popularly known. Google is marking this anniversary with a doodle of the late maestro. Saigal, blessed with a sonorous voice and a unique song style, was Bollywood's first legitimate 'superstar'. He was an actor-singer, appeared in 36 films made in three languages, and sang 185 songs in his 15-plus-year career. Saigal was the gold standard for all the singing luminaries who came after him; indeed, many mimicked him. These include Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar. To think, Saigal wasn't even a trained musician.
