Mahadevi Varma Is Today's Google Doodle: Know All About The Celebrated Hindi Poet. NEW DELHI: Google Doodle on Friday celebrated Mahadevi Varma, a Jnanpith Award-winning Hindi poet, freedom fighter and champion of women's rights. Widely regarded as the "modern Meera", Varma was born on March 26, 1907, in Farukhabad, to what she later described as a "relatively liberal family". However, her parents married her off at the age of 9, though she continued to live in Allahabad to complete her education while her husband stayed in Lucknow. It was Varma's mother who inspired her to write in Hindi and Sanskrit. As a young woman, she penned her first verses in secret -- only to be discovered by her friend Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, who also went on to become a well-known poet. Varma is counted among the four proponents of the Chhayavad movement in Hindi poetry. Her written works often centered on the experience of being a woman. Her feminist writing appeare

He was an actor-singer, appeared in 36 films made in three languages, and sang 185 songs in his 15-plus-year career. Saigal was the gold standard for all the singing luminaries who came after him; indeed, many mimicked him. These include Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar. He never managed to complete school and before his big break worked odd jobs like as a timekeeper and a salesman. He contin

Facebook’s brave new world

Facebook’s brave new world: India needs strong rules to ensure internet is not only free but also fair. I have an honest confession to make – i rarely read the terms and conditions or privacy policies of any websites that i visit or apps that i download. The policies are unintelligible, confusing and replete with legal jargon. Moreover, most policies are of a take-it-or-leave-it fashion – if you want the service, you must agree to its terms, most of which provide no option for negotiation. A combination of temptation for the service and belief in the good faith of the service provider means that every time i part with personal information online, i know that i am possibly signing away my right to keep my personal life private. But i do it nonetheless – after all, what could possibly happen? The startling revelation that Cambridge Analytica had access to personal data of over 87 million Facebook users is how the chickens come home to roost. This includes data, according to
