The 1942 Disney classic's striking appearance was created by Tyrus Wong, an Asian-American artist who drew inspiration from landscape paintings of the Song dynasty when he created the lush pastels that served as the movie's background paintings. One of the best known Asian-American artists of the 20th century, Wong created some of the most recognizable images in American culture over the course of a varied career.
