Mirza Ghalib

Remembering Mirza Ghalib as he turns 220: ‘The world is the body, Delhi its soul’. Ghalib (the conqueror) was born as Asadullah Baig Khan on December 27, 1797 in Kala Mahal, Agra into a family descending from Aibak Turks who moved to Samarkand (modern-day Uzbekistan) after downfall of Seljuk kings. He came to Delhi when he was 13. Ghalib ki Haveli was the residence of the 19th century Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib and is now a heritage site located in the Gali Qasim Jan, Ballimaran, Old Delhi and reflects the period when the Mughal era was on the decline in India. While staying at this Haveli, Ghalib wrote his Urdu and Persian diwans. (NurPhoto via Getty Images). Sanjay Singh doesn’t know Urdu. But whenever his friends are in town, he makes sure they visit Mirza Ghalib’s haveli that stands down Gali Qasim Jaan in Chandni Chowk’s rundown neighbourhood of Ballimaran. This Sunday too, Singh, 28, a graphic-designing student, accompanied his friend Dolan to the mansion, walking

Google tests ‘more results’ mobile search interface and new search refinement buttons Google told us, 'We constantly experiment with new search formats and experiences to deliver the best experience for our users.' Google has confirmed it is testing a new mobile search interface and a new search refinement button. The new search interface shows fewer search results on the mobile search results page, with the option to click on a button labeled “more results.” In addition, Google is testing showing buttons to refine your search directly in the search results snippets. A Google spokesperson told us “We constantly experiment with new search formats and experiences to deliver the best experience for our users.” Dan Brackett shared screen shots with us on  Twitter , but many others are noticing these new tests. You can also see the refinements at the top of the screen shot above. Here is another screen shot of these refinements directly in what is called a  feature

legendary Indian singer Mohammed Rafi

Image
Google has paid tribute to the late legendary Indian singer Mohammed Rafi through the Google doodle on 24 December which marks his 93rd birth anniversary. In a detailed post , Google outlines Rafi’s life right from when he was “a little boy named Pheeko” to Mohammed Rafi. The doodle was made by Sajid Shaikh, a Mumbai-based illustrator, depicting the image of Rafi recording music with wired headphones and a microphone with the music notes in his left hand. The doodle also includes a still from Rafi’s hit song ‘Chala Bhi Aa Aaja Rasiya’ from the drama ‘Man Ki Aankhen' (1970). This still shows Dharmendra and Waheeda as part of the sketch. It is also likely that the still could be from another of Rafi’s songs, ‘Aaj Mausam Bada Beimaan Hai’ from Loafer (1973) with Dharmendra and Mumtaz. The uncertainty is because of the similar poses used while shooting romantic songs in Bollywood in the 1970s and 1980s. Rafi was born in the pre-Partition era, in the Amritsar district of Punjab, Pa

With an adorable slideshow doodle featuring two cute penguins and their parrot friends, the search engine has officially declared that they, like the many others across the world, are excited about December festivities and how! And when you try and get over just how heart-touching the ‘Tis the season’ illustrations are, it would also fascinate you to see that there’s actually a story unfolding within the three photos. Just like catching up with family, friends and relatives is the essence of the festive season, the doodle shows the penguins packing their bags and gifts as they get ready to go meet their parrot friends. The first picture shows a telephone call between the penguins in the colder regions and the parrot in the more vibrant, tropical area. Second slide shows the penguins pa

clarification on Padmavati by Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Image
The Futility of Dreaming of the Padmavati-Khilji Dream Sequence. The opponents of  Padmavati  base their protests on rumours of a dream sequence between Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji despite Bhansali’s clarification that no such sequence exists in the film. A recent video by Sanjay Leela Bhansali carrying a clarification on  Padmavati , unlike his films, is calm and economical. In it, Bhansali says that the rumours of a dream sequence between queen Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji are incorrect and that no portrayal hurtful to the (Rajput) community’s sentiments exists in the film. The  Padmavati  controversy has assumed epic proportions, with death threats issued to actress Deepika Padukone and director Bhansali, with the release of the film postponed to January 2018. As the film-going public of India, including the protestors, are yet to see the film, those defending artistic expression are well within reason to dismiss the objections as baseless and motivated to foment furth

Google Celebrates Nobel Prize Winner's Birthday With A Doodle. Today Google is celebrating 135th birthday of Max Born with doodle. Without Max Born's development of the field of Quantum mechanics, today's modern world would perhaps not have been the same. Quantum mechanics is a part of physics which studies matter at the smallest form possible. And this is where Max Born, who was a German physicist and mathematician, played a huge role in making these inventions a reality. His contributions were recognized when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1954. Max Born was born on the 11th of December in 1882 in Breslau, which used to be a part of the German Empire, but is now a part of Poland. He studied at the University of Breslau and obtained his Ph.D at Gottingen University, where he went o

But Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu hailed it as "a historic day". President Trump's move reversed decades of US policy. The fate of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest issues between Israel and the Palestinians. Eight of the 15 nations who are currently members of the United Nations Security Council have called for the body to hold an urgent meeting on the US decision by the end of the week.
