Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa’s 113th birthday celebrated with a Google Doodle.

Google has today dedicated a special doodle to mark the 113th birthday of 20th century’s renowned Kannada poet and author, Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa. He was also famously known as Kuvempu or K.V. Puttappa.

Born on December 29, 1904 in Koppa Taluk of Mysore, Puttappa was also among the first Kannada writers to win the prestigious Jnanpith Award. Besides being a poet, he was also a novelist, playwright, critic and thinker.

Google mentioned on its blog, “known more famously by his pen name Kuvempu, he is considered one of the greatest Kannada writers of his time. The Kannada language is spoken mainly in Kuvempu’s home state of Karnataka, and he strongly advocated for it to be the main medium of education.”

The search giant has also featured Kuvempu’s poem ‘Poovu’ (The Flower). “Rhapsodizing on the beauty of the poet’s natural surroundings. Kuvempu loved his writing to reflect the simple wonder of the world around him, especially flowers,” Google explained in the blog.

Today’s doodle has been illustrated by Upamanyu Bhattacharyya, who was also helped with Swati Shelar with Kannada lettering. The doodle shows Kuvempu surrounded by nature in his beloved home.

The Government of Karnataka honored Kevempu with Rashtrakavi (National Poet) in 1958 and Karnataka Ratna (Gem of Karnataka) in 1992, for his contributions to the Kannada Literature. He was also conferred with Padma Vibhushan by Government of India in 1988. What’s more, Kevempu had also penned the Karnataka State Anthem, Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate.

Lastly, Kevempu’s contribution to ‘Universal Humanism’ also gives him a unique place in the modern Indian literature. He took his last breath on November 1, 1994, at the age of 89.
