International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8every year. It commemorates the movement for women's rights. While the first observance of a Women's Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York, March 8 was suggested by the 1910 International Woman's Conference to become an "International Woman's Day."


1. Anandibai Joshee

She was the first woman doctor who had skillfully learnt and practiced at the tender age of 21, western medicine. She has had a very struggling childhood with so many things at hand to handle at a very small age. She was married to a widower aged 20 merely when she was 9 and she lost her newborn baby because of the lack of proper medications. This pushed her to pursue medicine and she later on went abroad to complete her medical education in 1886 from Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. And, consequently she returned back to India and worked at Albert Edward Hospital in Kolhapur as a physician-in-charge of the female ward.

2. Asima Chatterjee

She is known for the developments of the anti-malarial and anti-epileptic drug and the research she has done on vinca alkaloids. She had also gained a lot of acclaim in phytochemistry that includes the study of chemicals that are obtained from plants. Asima Chatterjee also got a lot of respect for the work she did working as a chemist in the field of organic chemistry.

3. Darshan Ranganathan

Darshan Ranganathan was a well known name who had worked as organic chemist and had developed supramolecular assemblies, protein folding and the one who made chemical simulation of the various major biological processes. She is believed to be one of the well known organic chemists who had worked her way out. Even though she could comfortably work alongside her husband as a research associate at IIT Kanpur, she chose to join IICT, Hyderabad to work as a deputy director.

4. Janaki Ammal

She had worked as a researcher at the post of Director General in the Botanical Survey of India in the field of phytogeography and cytogenetics
