Ebenezer Cobb Morley. Ebenezer Cobb Morley was an English sportsman and is regarded as the father of the Football Association and modern football.  Ebenezer Cobb Morley's Rules Revolutionized Soccer. Before Ebenezer Cobb Morley, soccer looked quite different and much more brutal than “The Beautiful Game” played around the world today. Association football, as the sport was then known, bore a closer resemblance to rugby, permitting a greater amount of tackling and ball-handling. It also suffered from chaotic disorganization, with multiple competing leagues, schools, and competitions lacking a formal managing structure, and many playing by different sets of rules. Morley set the foundation for the Football Association (FA), the sport’s oldest official governing body, and laid down 13 rules to regulate the game, creating the first consistent definition of the sport. On what would have been Morley’s 187th birthday, Google celebrated the father of modern football with a Doodl

Meena Kumari’s 85th birth anniversary

On Meena Kumari’s 85th birth anniversary. It was tragic that Meena Kumari, who was termed as the “tragedy queen” of Bollywood for her immortal, iconic portrayals of a varied gamut of wronged, silent and long-suffering but dignified Indian women from passed-over love interests to neglected wives, was also one of the most unfortunate actresses whose grief did not end when the shooting was done. Meena Kumari, whose 85th birth anniversary is on Wednesday, was no less tragic than her roles in cinematic classics, spanning Baiju Bawra (1952) to Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Pakeezah (1972). In these and more, she could evoke such a lifetime of melancholy and anguish that it was difficult to believe that she was only in her 20s and 30s when she played these roles. But then, her circumstances had a great deal to contribute to this. Nearly abandoned at birth by her father (before a twinge of conscience made him return), her childhood was cut short by her parents’ demand that she

Google Doodle remembers Hubert Cecil Booth, inventor of the vacuum cleaner. The idea of a hygenic way to clean dust occurred to Booth while attending a demonstration of American machines in London. He observed that cleaning machines blew or brushed dirt away, making it a messy affair overall. Booth thought of designing a machine that would suck up dust instead. Vacuum cleaners modelled on Booth's design were made commercially available for the first time in 1901. Booth later went on to become the chairman and managing director of the British Vacuum Cleaner and Engineering Co.
