Moody’s rating

What the Moody’s rating upgrade does not change for the Indian economy. New Delhi:  The ratings upgrade India received from Moody’s Investors Service last week after a gap of 13 years is a big boost to investor sentiment, and is likely to lower borrowing costs of Indian firms. But what the upgrade does not change is the fact that India’s near-term economic outlook has deteriorated because of global and domestic headwinds. Topping the list is oil. As a previous Plain Facts column pointed out, the entire reduction in the fiscal deficit under the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government can be attributed to increased taxes on petrol and diesel. The centre’s tax revenue from petrol and diesel rose from 0.44% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013-14 to 1.44% of GDP in 2016-17, a gain of 1 percentage point or 100 basis points (bps). This has precisely been the extent of improvement in the fiscal deficit over the same period, from 4.5% of GDP in 201

Padmavati controversy

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra on Padmavati: Right to express as a filmmaker is as fundamental as right to protest. Amid the row over Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed Padmavati, director Sudhir Mishra today said a filmmaker’s right to express is as fundamental as a person’s right to protest. Mishra said that people have a right to express their anguish with anything they might find offensive as India is a democracy. “As a industry we stand by each other defending our right to make films. And if any one has any problem with the film they are free to express as we live in a democracy. But you can’t take away my right to express as a filmmaker as well. It is as fundamental as expressing protest and that’s all we are saying,” Mishra said on the sidelines of IFFI Panorama Section inauguration. Batting for Bhansali and his film, which has been postponed amid protests by various Rajput groups and political leaders, Mishra said Sanjay is a responsible person and will not hurt the se

Indian woman physician doctor

Rukhmabai, Indian woman physician, gets Google Doodle. Google India on Wednesday paid homage to Rukhmabai, Indian woman to practice  medicine  in colonial India, with a doodle. “Today’s Doodle by illustrator Shreya Gupta shows the courageous doctor among her patients, doing the dedicated work of a skilled physician,” said Google’s blog post on its doodles. But Rukhmabai has another feather in her cap. If women in modern India can assert their rights of consent, it is due to Rukhmabai refusing to recognise her marriage and the case filed by her husband thereafter. Born on this day in 1864 in Bombay, Rukhmabai was the only daughter of Janardhan Pandurang and Jayantibai. She lost her father when she was eight years old and was married off at the age of 11 to Dadaji Bhikaji. Her mother later married Sakharam Arjun, an eminent physician and the founding member of Bombay Natural History Society. Rukhmabai continued to stay with her mother and step-father even after m

Electronic products

Electronic products, consumer goods may cost less soon. NEW DELHI: The government has nudged  consumer goods  companies to cut prices and pass on the benefits of the recent  Goods and Services Tax  ( GST ) rate cut to customers. The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) on Monday asked the companies to immediately lower prices of shampoos, detergents, deodorants and other products on which GST was slashed from 28 per cent to 18 per cent. While several companies have already lowered prices, there are others who are yet to pass on the gains. As a result, CBEC chairperson Vanaja N Sarna has written to major fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies, pointing to the need of immediately revising the maximum retail price, the finance ministry said in a statement. Finance and Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia had earlier said that the FMCG firms and big corporates will have to ensure that retailers pass on the benefit of  GST rate cut  to consumers and sell their products only af
