Who was the Belgian priest who discovered the universe is expanding? Georges Lemaître was an astronomer and professor of physics who is thought to be the first to have theorised that the universe is expanding.  His theory was observationally confirmed soon afterwards by Edwin Hubble in what is now known as Hubble’s Law.  Lemaître is also credited with proposing what has now become known as the Big Bang theory – which says that the observable universe began with an explosion of a single particle.  Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître, RAS Associate was a Belgian Catholic Priest, astronomer and professor of physics at the Catholic University of Leuven. Google Doodle remembers Hubert Cecil Booth, inventor of the vacuum cleaner. The idea of a hygenic way to clean dust occurred to Booth while attending a demonstration of American machines in London. He observed that cleaning machines blew or brushed dirt away, making it a messy affair overall. Booth thought of designing a machine that would suck up dust instead. Vacuum cleaners modelled on Booth's design were made commercially available for the first time in 1901. Booth later went on to become the chairman and managing director of the British Vacuum Cleaner and Engineering Co. Today is noted statistician and scientist Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis' 125th anniversary and in honor of this occasion, Google has dedicated its today's doodle by Nishant Choksi to him. He was born on 29 June 1893 in West Bengal, Mahalanobis is known for his pioneering work in statistics and is most often remembered by the "Mahalanobis distance", a way of measurement used in population studies and was one of the members of the first Planning Commission of India. Today's Google doodle marks noted singer Gauhar Jaan's birth anniversary. Gauhar was among the first performers to record music on 78 rpm records in the country. The record was released by the Gramophone Company of India. Gauhar was born on June 26 in 1873, and her birth name was Angelina Yeoward. Her father was Armenian and her mother Victoria Hemmings was an Indian by birth. After her parents' divorce, Victoria moved to Benaras with a Muslim nobleman and the then eight-year-old Angelina accompanied her mother there. Both mother and daughter converted to Islam when in Benaras. Victoria changed her name to Malka Jaan and Angelina's name was changed to Gauhar Jaan. Malka became a noted singer and Kathak dancer in Benaras. Some years later, the mother-daughter duo moved to what was then called Calcutta where Gauhar began to train as a Hindustani classical musician. Walmart sells $16bn bonds to finance Flipkart acquisition. If you thought it would be that easy for a multi-billion company like Walmart to acquire Flipkart, you underestimated the size of the $16 billion deal. It appears that Walmart bit more than it can chew. The Arkansas-headquartered multinational retail corporation has sold $16 billion of bonds to help finance their Flipkart acquisition. Walmart has offered both fixed rate bonds and floating rate notes. Last month, after a lot of media speculation, Walmart announced to acquire 77 per cent stake in Flipkart for a whopping $16 billion. The remainder of the business is held by some of Flipkart’s existing shareholders, including Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, Tencent Holdings Limited, Tiger Global Management LLC and Microsoft Corp. Google Doodle Celebrates Glass Chemist Marga Faulstich's 103rd Birthday. Marga Faulstich received the IR100 award from the American Industrial Research Council for for her SF64 lightweight lens in 1973. The animated doodle to mark Ms Faulstich's birthday, shows her surrounded by glass lenses with her tying some on. Google also displayed early concepts of the doodle by famous artist, Sophia Martineck, all of which show Ms Faulstich surrounded by glasses, beakers and other lab equipments. Another hand-sketched doodle shows her in a chemistry lab set-up trying on lenses. Marga Faulstich began her career in chemistry as a graduate assistant at a manufacturing firm that specialised in optical lenses.  Her research was was used in the manufacture of sunglasses, anti-reflective glasses and glass facades.
